WILDE, Oscar. De profundis.

London. Methuen and Co., [1905]. Second edition.
8vo. 151pp. Bound for Hatchards in contemporary gilt-ruled red half-morocco, red cloth boards. Lightly rubbed and marked, spine lightly sunned. Occasional light marking to initial leaves, edges of endpapers browned.
The second English edition, printed in the same year as the first, of Wilde's impassioned letter to his lover, Lord Alfred Bruce 'Bosie' Douglas, written during his imprisonment in Reading Gaol. Published in collaboration with another former lover of Wilde, attorney-general Robert Ross (to whom Wilde had entrusted the original manuscript), this early, abridged printing removed all autobiographical insinuations and mentions of the Queensbury family. The controversial, suppressed full text would not be published corrected and in its entirety until 1962, with scholars attempting to assemble an 'authoritative' edition ever since.
