THE LOST BOYS

[HODDER-WILLIAMS, John Ernest]. Like English Gentlemen.

London. Hodder and Stoughton, [1913]. First edition.
8vo. 61pp, [3]. Original publisher's pictorial paper boards. A trifle rubbed and marked, spine dulled. Internally clean and crisp.
An intensely sentimental juvenile tale in which Kathleen Scott explains to her infant son, through comparison with the story of Peter Pan, the fateful Antarctic voyage and death of his father Sir Robert Falcon Scott.

The book, written by publisher Sir John Ernest Hodder-Williams (1876-1927), was hastily sent to press in order to solicit donations to the Daily Chronicle's fund established to aid in making provision for the dependents of Scott and his companions. The solicitation is accompanied by Scott's final diary entry and a message from J. M. Barrie:

Almost every Briton alive has been prouder these last days because a message from a tent has shown him how the breed lives on; but it seems almost time to remind him of that more practical Englishman who said of a friend in need, "I am sorry for him £5; how much are you sorry?"
