PRESENTED BY A MOTHER TO ANTONY EDEN

LANGLAND, William [Henry W. Wells]. The vision of piers plowman.

London. Sheed and Ward, 1935. First edition.
8vo. 304pp. Original publisher's tan cloth, lettered in gilt. Rubbed and marked, lower joint split. Bookplate of John Ronald Hamilton Cartland to FEP. With a loosely inserted bookplate of Antony Eden, inscribed to FFEP 'In memory of fond friendship with my son Roland. Mary Cartland, April 12 1942'.
A mother’s fond memorial, presented to a future Prime Minister, of fallen British serviceman Major John Ronald Hamilton Cartland (1907-1940), who was a serving Conservative Member of Parliament from 1935, until he was killed in action, aged 33.

Evidently a good friend of future Prime Minister Antony Eden, both young politicians were branded by then Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's anti-appeasement '17-strong Glamour Boys' . Cartland is best remembered now for his speech in the house of commons on the 2nd August 1939: 'We are in the situation that within a month we may be going to fight, and we may be going to die'. War on Germany was declared by the United Kingdom one month and one day later, and Cartland himself was killed in the Battle of Dunkirk in 1940. He was survived by his mother Mary, and sister Barbara Cartland, the romance novelist. His brother was killed in action the day before him?
