The first edition of David Gray's (1838-1861) principal poem, published shortly after his untimely death from tuberculosis aged just twenty-three, with a prefatory by his patron Richard Monckton Milnes, first Baron Houghton (1809-1885), and a memoir by fellow poet James Hedderwick (1814-1897), in whose periodical the Glasgow Citizen Gray's poems had appeared.
