The first edition of a history of the Order of the Golden Fleece by Jules Chifflet (1615-1676), son of Burgundian antiquary Jean-Jacques Chifflet (1588-1660), the author of an early heraldic survey of the Order, Insignia gentilitia equitum ordinis velleris aurei (Antwerp, 1632).

The Order of the Golden Fleece is an order of knighthood founded by Philip III the Good, Duke of Burgundy in 1430 to defend the Roman Catholic religion and uphold the usages of chivalry. Following the War of Spanish Succession, the order divided into two branches, the Spanish and the Austrian.
