Folio. Large paper copy. [42], 506pp, [6]. Printed on fine paper with the Strasbourg Arms watermark of a fleur-de-lys surmounting a shield. With a list of subscribers, an engraved frontispiece, and numerous engraved vignettes/initials. Contemporary panelled calf, recently rebacked and recornered, preserving contemporary red calf lettering-piece. Boards worn. Recent book-label of Peter Scupham to FEP, offsetting to title page, damp-staining to foot of text-block.
In 1709 Prior published Poems on Several Occasions, the first of two so-named collections of his poetry. To raise money after his release from house arrest during the shift of power in England, Tonson and Alexander Pope especially aided Prior in setting to type a subscriber's edition of his poems. The project was a great success with nearly 1,500 names included.
