8vo. Manuscript on paper. Contemporary half-sheep, marbled boards. Extremities heavily rubbed, surface loss to spine. Scattered foxing. Later inked inscription to FEP: 'Vol. of Dr. Henderson's MSS :- pulpit preparations from Miss Hay, Galashiels, 1865.'
An extensive journal of manuscript notations, in a single neat hand, composed in preparation for sermons to be delivered throughout 1838, by the Reverend James Henderson of the East United Presbyterian Church, ordained 29th August, 1810. In June, 1814, Henderson married Miss Isabella Hay, sister of Mr. Hay, the associate minister at Stowe. In 1817 Henderson opened the first Sabbath school in Galashiels. In 1844 the University of St. Andrews conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Divinity. He was the author of a single published work Strictures on a pamphlet entitled "Voluntary Church Association" and their manifesto against establishments considered" (Edinburgh, 1833). He died on 5th November, 1858.
