SAINT-PIERRE [Jacques-Henri-Bernardin de]. La capanna indiana.

Firenze [i.e. Florence]. Presso Guglielmo Piatti, 1808.
12mo. 106pp. Contemporary straight-grain gilt-tooled black morocco. A trifle rubbed. Leaves lightly toned.
A handsomely bound copy of an Italian translation of Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's (1737-1814) celebrated novel, first published as La Chaumière indienne at Paris in 1790. The work, in which a traveler finds wisdom in the cottage of an Indian outcast, is an early example of cultural primitivism in literature, a theme that was to become central to the Romantic movement.
